
INFERTILITY IN WOMEN
Yesterday, we started the reproductive health and maternal health series. Fertility in women is our focus, tonight we will be learning infertility in women.
Infertility is not getting pregnant, despite having carefully trimmed pregnancy in a duration of one year. Infertility means not being able to get pregnant after one year of trying (one woman if a woman is 35 or older)
The most common causes of female infertility includes problems with ovularion, damage to fallopian tubes or uterus. It can also be as a result of problems with the cerivix or cervical injury.
Ovulation problems may be caused by one or more of the following.
- A hormone imblance: Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a hormone imbalance problem which interfere with normal ovulation.
- A tumor or cyst
- Eating disorders such as anorexia or bulima
- Alcohol or drug use
- Thyroid gland problems
Damage to the fallopian tubes or uterus can be caused by one or more of the following
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- A previous infection
- A birth defect
- A previous ectopic pregnancy
- Endometriosis or fibroids
Other causes includes:
Weight is an important consideration in a woman's fertility. Women who are underweight can experience irregular menstrual cycles and issues with ovulation. Being overweight or obese can also interfere with normal menstruation and ovulation. A woman who is overweight can have a higher risk of miscarriage and other pregnancy complications.

Prevention
- Take steps to prevent sexually transmitted disease
- Avoid illicit drugs
- Avoid healthy or frequent alcohol use
- Adopt good personal hygience and health practices
- Have annual check ups with your gynaecologists once you are sexually active.
